Terps' Charles Mitchell might have even more to offer

I wrote last week going into the Kentucky game that freshmen Charles Mitchell and Seth Allen had outplayed the two most celebrated members of Mark Turgeon's first recruiting class, Shaquille Cleare and Jake Layman.

Mitchell, the last of the four to sign, has certainly been the most consistent. His 10 rebounds against the then-No. 3 Wildcats turned out to be the most by a Terps freshman in his first college game since Buck Williams in 1978, and we all know what kind of player he turned out to be.

I am writing a story for Friday's newspaper on Mitchell's rebounding prowess and how senior James Padgett's steady play has helped both Mitchell and Cleare develop.

Here's what Turgeon had to say at his news conference Thursday looking ahead to Friday's home game against LIU Brooklyn: "He just goes after it, he tries to rebound every time," Turgeon said. "He's got good feet, he doesn't accept blockouts and he's got a nose for the ball."

Turgeon also said we haven't seen anything close to what he believes Mitchell has to offer.

"I don't think Charles is playing very well yet, to be quite honest with you," Turgeon said. "I think Charles is really good. He can really score, right and left, around the basket. He can defend a lot better and will have to tomorrow night. I know everyone is excited about Charles and I'm excited about his rebounding, but there's so much more from that kid than we're getting and I think you'll see that as the year goes along.”
