As expected, Maryland assistant men’s basketball coach Scott Spinelli has left to take a similar job at Boston College, according to reports Saturday.

Spinelli, who grew up outside Boston, is expected to join the Eagles as new coach Jim Christian’s top assistant, according to CBSsports.com. Spinelli is considered a top recruiter in New England.

Spinelli's decision to leave Maryland comes in the aftermath of a disappointing 17-15 season for the Terps and a tumultuous week which saw three players leave the team.

On Tuesday, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon announced that junior guard Nick Faust (City), sophomore center Shaquille Cleare and freshman guard Roddy Peters had all asked for their release from scholarships in order to transfer. He also confirmed reports that Spinelli was in "serious" negotiations with Boston College.

The departure of Spinelli ends a seven-year relationship with Turgeon that began at Texas A&M. Spinelli had tried unsuccessfully to get head coaching jobs after each of the first two seasons in College Park.

Neither Spinelli nor Turgeon could be reached for comment.
