Rutgers transfer Eli Carter picks Florida over Maryland

Rutgers transfer Eli Carter announced this afternoon on Twitter that he "will be continuing my career at the University of Florida !! #Go Gators."

The news won’t shock those in College Park considering that the former Scarlet Knights guard took a visit to Gainesville on Sunday and Monday.

But it clearly puts a little pressure on Mark Turgeon and his assistants, who hope to convince former Memphis guard Antonio Barton to return to his home state.

I talked with Barton on Monday and he spoke positively about the Terps and the system run by Turgeon. I know that his close friend Nick Faust is working Barton hard about coming to College Park.

I also assume another of Barton’s close friends, C.J. Fair of Syracuse, is doing the same thing. As is Kansas State assistant Chester Frazier, who like Barton went to Lake Clifton.

Taking a look at the way Carter was used at Rutgers, I wasn’t sure he would be a good fit for the Terps. Too many turnovers and poor shooting nights.

Carter would have also been a two-year commitment and might have messed up the recruiting of both Melo Trimble, who has committed to Maryland, and Dion Wiley, who is still weighing his offers.

That’s not to say Turgeon, who first recruited Carter out of prep school to Texas A&M three years ago, isn’t disappointed losing out to Billy Donovan and the Gators. Turgeon doesn’t like to lose at anything.

Losing Barton to the Orange will be a much tougher defeat should that occur, given that Syracuse is coming into the ACC next season.
