Here are some additional notes from Maryland's 43-10 win over Florida International.
** Did you notice that Stefon Diggs was the first Maryland player out of the tunnel to leap into the arms and laps of fans in the first row of the student section? Then he returned the season’s opening kickoff 40 yards before he was tackled.
** Diggs caught a 66-yard touchdown pass. But one of Maryland’s best moments of the day came when quarterback C.J. Brown executed a perfect pitch to Diggs on the read-option down the sideline for 26 yards in the first half. Brown waited until the last second to pitch the ball.
** Did you notice the one-handed catch by Diggs for a 10-yard gain with the Terps leading, 13-3, at the end of the first quarter? Another beauty.
** Maryland defensive line coach Greg Gattuso said he'd call defensive linesman Quinton Jefferson "Kitty Kat" until his first sack. Jefferson was credited with 1/2 sack in the second quarter ... So now he's just "Kitty?"
Actually, Jefferson told me he believes the “Kitty Kat” moniker has been totally shed.
** Maryland cornerback Dexter McDougle took several hard charges at the quarterback from the edge. In the second quarter, he hit Florida International's Jake Medlock from the blind side just after he released the ball. McDougle also made a juggling interception in the third quarter.
** Deon Long said his first touchdown catch with the Terps came as the result of the defense focusing on Diggs. That’s not a bad scenario for the Terps this season, right?
“It was an ‘ooze-out’ play, a feel-your-way play, so the defense can key on Stefon -- and they keyed on him,” Long said.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
