Becoming just the fifth player to record at least 20 tackles in a game this season, Maryland defensive tackle Joe Vellano earned ACC defensive lineman of the week for his play against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
It’s the second time the junior has received the honor this season. On Saturday, Vellano recorded 20 tackles, including 14 solo stops, against one of the nation’s top offenses in Atlanta. He is the only lineman in the FBS to register more than 15 tackles in a game this season.
Vellano became the sixth Terps player to reach the 20-tackle plateau since 1990, including the first defensive lineman. The last Maryland player to reach the mark was Dave Philistin in 2007.
“We probably had one of the most outstanding performances that I think -- I know -- I've ever seen out of a D-lineman," coach Randy Edsall said in Sunday’s teleconference. "When you watch the film and watch how hard he played, he just did a phenomenal job.”
Vellano also earned the honor after the season’s first week when he returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown against Miami.
