With the shifting sands of conference realignment, you’re either proactive or passive. If you’re not the hunter,  you’re probably the prey.

That’s the reality in which the ACC announced today that its Council of Presidents voted to accept Notre Dame as a new member. The Irish will compete as full members except in football. But they will play five football games per season against league programs.

Notes about the move:

*At the time the ACC announced the addition of Syracuse and Pitt last year, the conference’s expansion clearly was not complete. Maryland was among those privately expressing interest in a 16-team conference, according to ACC-member representatives. According to the representatives, other ACC schools also favored moving to 16 but at least one unnamed member was then opposed to expansion.

*There have remained concerns in the ACC about striking the proper balance between football and basketball. One member school, Florida State, had indicated its interest in making sure whatever conference it is in -- including a revamped ACC -- had a high enough football profile.

Some fans and others point out that Notre Dame doesn’t have the football record it once did. That is true, but it’s Notre Dame and that brand still means something.
