COLLEGE PARK — Here are some notes and observations from Maryland’s Friday morning practice, which was held at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
** Players and coaches continue to talk up redshirt sophomore left tackle Michael Dunn, and Dunn pancaked outside linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil on a run play early in practice. Dunn also helped spring running back Albert Reid for a long run shortly later.
** Backup left tackle Jake Wheeler got good push on a Wes Brown run early in practice. But the left side of the second-team offensive line — Wheeler and left guard Damian Prince — has stuck out for the wrong reasons at times during camp, including Friday. Wheeler was beaten for a sack and has had trouble against outside linebacker Yannick Ngakoue and others during the last two weeks.
** Cornerback Alvin Hill had another good practice. Hill intercepted a long C.J. Brown pass attempt Thursday and picked off another long Brown pass Friday after sticking with the fastest player on Maryland’s team, Taivon Jacobs. Hill also did well against both Stefon Diggs and Levern Jacobs during wide receiver and defensive back one-on-one drills. He had tight coverage on Diggs to induce an off-target throw and batted away a pass attempt intended for Levern Jacobs.
** Backup safety A.J. Hendy made some plays Friday after making a big hit Thursday. Hendy looked good in coverage during one-on-ones and returned a fumble for a touchdown later during team drills.
** Wes Brown looked good Friday. Coaches and teammates love Brown’s physicality and violent running style, but he is also a fluid mover for someone 215 pounds and looked fast at times Friday.
** Backup quarterback Caleb Rowe has a great arm and has made some big throws during camp, but he also consistently frustrates coach Randy Edsall and offensive coordinator Mike Locksley. One of Rowe's bad habits is holding onto the ball too long and taking sacks, which he did on a third-down attempt Friday. After the play, Rowe was summoned over to Edsall, who had an animated 30-second conversation with his backup quarterback.
** Levern Jacobs continues to stand out and had a big catch over the middle late in practice.
** Safety Sean Davis and outside linebacker Matt Robinson did a good job on a play-action play near the goal-line during team drills. Neither was fooled, which forced a throw away from Rowe.
** Running back-turned-receiver Jacquille Veii has made some plays at his new position, but he had a couple drops Friday.
** Third-string quarterback Perry Hills returned to practice after being away from the team for a few days following the death of his grandmother.
