Quarterback C.J. Brown has started only a single game for Maryland, and there's already speculation about whether Danny 'O'Brien -- the starter the previous 15 games -- could depart for another school.
It's a bit premature. At least for now, those who know him say O'Brien doesn't intend to leave. That doesn't surprise me. His attachment to Maryland and the region is strong, and that's not something that changes overnight.
O'Brien is smart enough to know seasons are long, and outlooks for players can swiftly change. He knows better than to grumble about playing time and become a distraction while there is still football to be played. Remember that he was among the first prominent players to commit to staying when the coaching change occurred before last season's Military Bowl.
Having said that, it could be a different situation at year's end. O'Brien will need to assess not only where he stands in relation to Brown, but also whether he can be effective in an offense that seems less suited to him than the one Maryland ran a year ago.
And a final note: I'm sure Matt Furstenburg loved his late grandmother very much. But the tight end was candid when asked by a media member whether he dedicated this season to her.
"I mean, not really," he said.
Furstenburg did say: "I hope she's watching over me."
