Here are notes as the Terps practice for Saturday’s opener against William & Mary. I will have a full-length story on another topic later in the day.
** You were wondering about senior kicker Nick Ferrara? He was omitted from the depth chart on Monday, and freshman Brad Craddock, the Punter (and kicker) from Down Under, was awarded the kicking job. Coach Randy Edsall said Ferrara, who had hip surgery during the offseason, is experiencing soreness and is day-to-day. Ferrara had been kicking during the preseason, but Edsall said the kicker “had some issues.”
Ferrara surely wants to finish his career as well as he started it. You remember him as a freshman? He had 80 points (18-for-25 on field goals) and kicked a 50-yarder, his career long.
So you can add a true freshman kicker (Craddock) to the mix of starting players that includes a true freshman quarterback, a redshirt freshman tailback, a true freshman strong safety and a true freshman punt and kick returner.
Should be fascinating Saturday because you never know quite how a freshman is going to react in his first game.
** Edsall confirmed that defensive players Kenny Tate (LB), Matt Robinson (S), Isaiah Ross (DL) and A.J. Hendy (DB) are all out for the William & Mary game, and Keith Bowers (DL) is likely to be listed as doubtful
** Edsall awarded scholarships to six walk-on players. They are Clarence Claiborne (DB), Yannick Cudjoe-Virgil (LB), Jeff Hernandez (FB), Kwabena Ofori (RB), Greg Parcher (starting long snapper) and Alex Walker (DL). Claiborne and Hernandez appear on the two-deep depth chart as backups.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
