NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No current Maryland player has made it to a Final Four. Senior guard Katie Rutan once came tantalizingly close, but not with the Terps.

Rutan was a Xavier sophomore in 2010 when the Musketeers found themselves tied with Stanford late in a regional final.

Stanford’s Jeanette Pohlen drove the length of the floor in 4.4 seconds for a layup at the buzzer to send the Cardinal to the Final Four with a 55-53 victory. Xavier had missed two layups in the final minute.

Rutan, who transferred to Maryland for her junior season, fervently hoped that would not be her last shot at the national semifinals.

“It was really disappointing,” Rutan said Saturday, after she and her teammates had signed hundreds of autographs for fans on the concourse of Bridgestone Arena. “You think you’ll never be back or have the opportunity.”

Now that she has arrived at the Final Four, she said she wouldn’t change a thing about her career path.
