Maryland football coach Randy Edsall wants to make Terrapins spring football more of a fan event — and he hopes to start by bringing it on the road, including perhaps to Baltimore.

Edsall said Friday he'd like to hold a spring scrimmage or two away from College Park. He mentioned Baltimore and the Frederick area as possibilities.

"Instead of always having people come to us, we go there and make it easier for them," Edsall said.

Edsall and other Maryland coaches already travel around the state with athletic department staff, talking to fans during the spring and summer. Earlier this year, they traveled to Hagerstown, Ocean City, Columbia, Hunt Valley and Germantown, among other locations.

Spring football is a large event at many other schools, attracting tens of thousands of fans to intrasquad games.

Maryland's Red-White spring game at Byrd Stadium has had limited interest in recent years.

Edsall said recently the game will be on a Friday night next year — April 12. It had previously been held on Saturday afternoons.

Maryland has special interest in holding events in Baltimore, where it recruits heavily and has many fans.

Men's basketball coach Mark Turgeon said over the summer he hoped to schedule a regular-season game in Baltimore this year.

The logistics didn't work, but the coach said "I really want to do it" in future seasons.

Baltimore hasn't hosted one of the basketball team's games since November 1999.

Maryland beat Navy in football in front of an announced 69,348 fans at M&T Bank Stadium in 2010. Maryland's football team is scheduled to return to the city to play West Virginia in 2013.
