West Virginia starting cornerback Ishmael Banks will be suspended for the Mountaineers’ first three games because of an academic issue, West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen announced Monday.

That means Banks will be unavailable when the Mountaineers play Maryland and arguably one of the best receiving corps in the country Sept. 13.

The 6-foot, 184-pound Banks started every game for West Virginia as a redshirt junior last season and had four tackles during the Mountaineers' loss to the Terps last September.

West Virginia opens its season against No. 2 Alabama Saturday before hosting Towson and then traveling to play Maryland.
