NCAA women's tourney back at Comcast Center in 2011

The University of Maryland has been selected as a first- and second-round site for the 2011 NCAA women's basketball tournament. The Terps are 5-1 in NCAA tournament games at Comcast Center, winning four in a row to earn trips to the Sweet 16 each of the past two seasons in front of home fans. Ticket information will be released this summer. The four regional sites for 2011 are Dayton, Ohio, Spokane, Wash., Dallas and Philadelphia. The Final Four will be held in Indianapolis.

More women's basketball: Maryland received the 27th most votes, 114, in the preseason Associated Press poll released Friday. Defending champion Connecticut is ranked No. 1. North Carolina was the highest-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team at No. 5, trailed by No. 6 Duke, No. 14 Virginia, No. 15 Florida State and No. 19 Georgia Tech.

Women's soccer: Top seed Loyola (13-4-3, 9-0-0) advanced to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals with a 5-4 win over Manhattan on penalty kicks after tying at 1 through two overtime periods. Senior Amanda Meehan converted in the sixth round of penalty kicks after freshman goalkeeper Danielle Ippolito snagged a shot by the Jaspers' Jill Beauchamp to give the Greyhounds the victory. Loyola, undefeated in its past 12 games, will play fifth seed Canisius (13-3-3, 4-3-2) at 11 a.m. Sunday. ... Freshman Beth Lambros (North Harford) scored a little more than three minutes into the second overtime period to give top seed Harford Community College (16-2) a 2-1 win over fifth seed CCBC-Essex (7-10) in a Region XX semifinal Thursday night in Bel Air. The Fighting Owls will host second seed Anne Arundel (12-2-1) at 11:30 a.m. today.

Men's soccer: Danny Ankrah and Jamie Darvill scored, helping host Loyola (8-6-2, 5-0-1) to a 2-0 victory over No. 22 Iona (11-2-2, 5-1-0) in the MAAC. The Greyhounds' previous victory over a ranked opponent came Sept. 19, 2001, when they beat 12th-ranked Maryland, 1-0. ... Colgate (7-8-1, 3-3-0) scored a pair of goals in a two-minute, 23-second span in the second half to hand visiting Navy (8-9-0, 2-4-0) a 2-0 loss in the Patriot League. ... Towson junior midfielder Marco Mangione (Calvert Hall) and senior forward Tommy Appel-Schumacher were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District 2 second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
