Former Terps quarterback Statham signs with Mariners

Former Maryland starting quarterback Joel Statham signed with the Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association. As a sophomore in 2004, Statham won the starting job for the Terps and played in 10 games. He completed 126 of 234 passes for 1,590 yards and recorded eight touchdowns. In three seasons at Maryland, he totaled 19 games played, 1,947 yards and 10 touchdowns. Statham will compete against Mariners 2009 starter E.J. Nemeth, 2009 backup Matt Folke and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mike Potts for the starting position in 2010.

Basketball: The Maryland Marvels of the American Basketball Association released their 10-man roster for the 2009-10 season. It includes guards Rogers Barnes (River Hill, Morgan State), Maurice Davis, Ronald Grant, Daryl Moore and Jamel White; forwards Eric Bigby and Anthony Breland; center Sam Wallace; shooting guard-small forward Kyle Sullivan (St. Mary's College); and forward-center Kenneth Simms. The Marvels will play the Eastern Basketball Alliance's Salem Mustangs in an exhibition at 5 p.m. Saturday at Severn. The season opener is at 5 p.m. Nov. 29 at Severn.

Golf: Chris Baloga used a 2-under-par 68, the only sub-par round of the two-day 55th annual Baltimore City amateur golf championship, as a springboard to the title, finishing 70-68-138 to beat runner-up Tom Grem (72-74-146) by eight strokes at the Country Club of Maryland.
