With the World Cup coming to a close, we can look back on the tournament as one of the greatest of recent memory.
It featured a number of top performances and breakout games, and there were plenty of names who stood out. I took a crack at my Best XI from the World Cup.
GK - Manuel Neuer (GER)
Ds - Philipp Lahm (GER), Ron Vlaar (NED), Mats Hummels (GER)
MFs - Javier Mascherano (ARG), James Rodriguez (COL), Toni Kroos (GER), Arjen Robben (NED)
Fs - Neymar (BRA), Lionel Messi (ARG), Thomas Muller (GER)
There are five Germans on the Best XI, pointing only to the team's strength and depth, while just one Brazilian made the squad. Messi was fantastic for much of the tournament and took his team as far as it could go, while James Rodriguez was undoubtedly the breakout star. Ron Vlaar was one of the best defenders of the whole tournament, and Arjen Robben may have been the best player.
Philipp Lahm showed his quality all tournament at outside back, while Hummels was so consistent. Mascherano was vital to Argentina in the knockout stages, and Toni Kroos was the best of an uber-talented German midfield. Thomas Muller continues to prove himself as one of the deadliest strikers on the world stage.
Who are the biggest snubs? What does your Best XI look like?
