PLYMOUTH, Mich. - With little else he could do at the time, goalkeeper Dave Kern dropped to his knees in frustration late in the Blast's 19-8 loss to the Detroit Ignition last night.
The Ignition's Ryan Mack had just scored his second goal of the game to make it 17-8 with 9:11 left, and the home crowd roared its approval.
It created a common scene in suburban Detroit for the Blast, which has lost seven of eight games against the Ignition over two seasons. The Blast has never won at Compuware Arena.
"They're a very good team. Very compact, very organized," said Blast forward Adauto Neto, who scored a season-high three goals and gave the Blast an early 2-0 lead.
The Blast (14-9), which still has won eight of its past 10 games, dropped to third place in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings, 1 1/2 games behind the league-leading Milwaukee Wave and one game behind the Ignition (14-7).
Kern, who lost for the first time in five starts, allowed five goals in the fourth quarter. Ricardhino scored three times, including twice in the final quarter, and Mack added two goals.
Kern, who made 14 saves, had to come out of his net on several occasions to take on the Ignition's speedy forwards one-on-one. During a Blast power play in the opening quarter, Kern faced a three-on-one in which he made one save only to watch 2007 MISL Player of the Year Jamar Beasley tap the rebound into a wide-open net.
"[Kern] made some quality saves," Blast coach Danny Kelly said. "I don't think he's the reason we lost by any means."
Goals by Detroit's Worteh Sampson, Beasley, Mack and Ricardhino resulted in nine straight points and a 9-2 halftime lead for the Ignition.
Goals in the third quarter by Neto and Machel Millwood cut the Ignition's lead to 9-6.
"At that point, we were feeling pretty good," Kelly said. "Then, a couple of unforced errors, we turn the ball over, and they capitalize on it. It kind of pulled away from us."
