STOCKTON, Calif. - The Blast's Denison Cabral might wish he played every game in California after scoring a team season-high six goals.
Last night's 26-23 victory over the California Cougars, whom the Blast had yet to beat this season in two tries, kept the Blast two games behind the Milwaukee Wave in its chase to become the No. 2 seed in the Major Indoor Soccer League playoffs.
"It was a great performance ... " Blast coach Danny Kelly said. "But as a team, we can't give up 23 points and expect to win."
The 26 points by the Blast (16-9) were a season high, eclipsing the 25 it scored Feb. 2 against the Orlando Sharks. The offensive showcase overshadowed the Blast's porous defense and the goalkeeping of Dave Kern, who improved to 5-1 this season despite allowing 11 goals, the most allowed this season by the Blast.
"It was a great game by Dave; he kept us in the game," Kelly said.
The teams went back and forth through much of the second half as the Blast hung on.
Unlike their last matchup on Dec. 15, a 7-4 California victory, the Blast and Cougars had little trouble scoring.
Cabral took the opening kickoff and scored to give the Blast 2-0 lead.
With the Blast down 8-6 in the second quarter, Lucio had a three-point goal on a line-drive shot to the upper corner of the net. Within minutes, Cabral had his third and fourth goals, the last coming on a two-man advantage.
The Blast went into halftime up 15-8.
