Orioles pitching staff should be OK after seeing double

Orioles manager Buck Showalter always worries about the impact on his pitching staff when the schedule gets scrambled by bad weather, but the club figures to come out of Thursday's doubleheader in pretty good shape under the circumstances.

The rotation isn't going to get too derailed, since the Orioles have another day off Monday between their visits to Minnesota and Tampa Bay. So, either Chris Tillman or Bud Norris will get an extra day of rest, depending on who comes back on four days Tuesday.

The bullpen also doesn't figure to be terribly taxed, even though Norris only got through 5 1/3 innings in the first game Thursday. Showalter used five pitchers for an inning or shorter after the two-day layoff, and left-hander Troy Patton returned from his suspension in time to work in the nightcap (if necessary).

Of course, the big issue going forward is how well the team will buy time while Chris Davis recovers from that oblique strain. That's a tough thing to project since no one knows how long Davis will be lost, but it certainly helps to get a big contribution from fill-in first baseman Steve Pearce in Thursday's first game and have Manny Machado back in the lineup for the nightcap.
