When the Terrapins take the field against Connecticut today at Byrd Stadium, it obviously won’t be one of the feature games on ABC, but it actually is something of a lynchpin game for Maryland.
The Terps are trying to convince more fans to show up on Saturdays, and beating the Huskies would improve their record to 3-0 and build a bridge over next week’s potentially ugly game at West Virginia into a home matchup against a beatable Wake Forest team that could leave them 4-1 as they approach the half-way point in their schedule.
Admittedly, if we’ve learned anything Orioles manager Buck Showalter, nobody should be focused on the possibilities two weeks from now, but after last year’s dismal 2-10 record, three wins in three games would be a big public relations plus for Randy Edsall and his program.
It’s still going to be tough to project a winning season with the ACC schedule the Terps are set to play, but if they win the four early games they can win – starting today – they would be just a medium upset and one big defensive performance away from bowl eligibility.
How’s that for a little positive spin.
