Freddy Garcia sneaks past the Blue Jays

Veteran pitcher Freddy Garcia was able to hold off that scary Toronto Blue Jays lineup for five innings on a bright Saturday afternoon when the ball was flying out of Rogers Centre, which is a testament to his ability to move the ball around and make the most of what’s left in his 36-year-old arm. But don’t give him too much credit.

The Jays hit the ball pretty well and had runners all over the place, but in the situations where they could have turned the game around, they scorched the ball right at somebody.

Yamaico Navarro made a great leaping stab to save a run in the second inning. Nate McLouth was in the right place at the right time for a couple of lineouts to left field.

And J.J. Hardy snagged a line drive in a fifth inning that almost blew up anyway when Garcia cost himself a run when he hit Brett Lawrie with a throw on what should have been an inning-ending play at first base.

(Lawrie, by the way, was well inside the baseline and should have been called out for obstructing the play, but the Orioles have been on the wrong side of a number of umpiring calls and non-calls over the past week or so.)

Garcia allowed three runs on nine hits over five innings and threw a total of 103 pitches. But there was a lesson in there for some of the other Orioles pitchers. He didn’t walk anybody, which is one of those things that helps a pitcher get lucky sometimes.
