Don't know how long Buck Showalter and Dan Duquette can keep pulling rabbits out of their hats, but Zach Britton's performance on Saturday night at Comerica Field would have made Houdini blush.
Britton worked out of several big jams against the potent Detroit Tigers lineup by locating his sinker at critical moments and getting key double plays. The fact that he had multiple runners on base in each of the first three innings is an indication that he's still got some work to do to get back to where he was early last year, but the fact that he was able to maintain his poise and get big outs should provide a major confidence boost going forward.
Clearly, Britton could be a very important pitcher for the Orioles down the stretch if he is starting to find himself, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Orioles have had a lot of good fortune plugging pitchers into emergency start situations, but it remains to be seen whether Britton and Chris Tillman can establish enough consistency to shore up the rotation for the tough road that leads to the playoffs.
