Now that Manny Machado has delivered his mea culpa in an exclusive Mid-Atlantic Sports Network intervew, it's time for the Orioles to do the same for awkwardly exploiting an already embarrassing situation.
The O's spent Monday afternoon shielding Machado from legitimate inquiries about his behavior over the weekend, violating the spirit of MLB media rules that require players to be available for interview during a pre-set period before each game. Then the club made Machado available only to its in-house network and explained that it had every right to maintain exclusivity on a high-interest story.

Never mind that the cloak-and-dagger stuff was totally unnecessary, since MASN was the only media vehicle in a position to broadcast Machado's apology in real time. There is an ethical question here that Major League Baseball needs to address.
MASN is under no obligation to be an objective media outlet and no one should be bothered by that, but the decision by team officials to stage Machado's public apology for ratings purposes made it look like a WWE production and displayed a troubling conflict of interest inside the organization.
Though no one is suggesting the club would ever do anything unseemly simply for the purpose of generating media revenue, turning this kind of unfortunate event into a promotional opportunity certainly creates an unseemly appearance.
It'll be interesting to see if the Commissioner's Office cares enough to do anything about it.
