All-Star Game was quick and merciful

The All-Star Game was not exactly loaded with intrigue and excitement, but at least it didn't last all night. It came in at a crisp two hours and 59 minutes, only a few minutes longer than the introduction of the two lineups and the singing of the National Anthem.

Clearly, Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander was just too amped up to control his 100-mph fastball and that was basically the story of the game. The last time anybody overcame a five-run deficit in the Midseason Classic was back in 1955, a year that is famous for only two things -- the "Boys of Summer" and the handsome baby boy who was born to Paul and Roberta Schmuck a month before the Dodgers won their first world title.

Once the outcome was all but assured, the only thing left to do was wait for the three Orioles representatives to make their presence known. All played in the late innings, but you know that because you could actually stay up late enough to see the end of the game this year. Jim Johnson was his usual nasty self, pitching a scoreless eighth inning and Matt Wieters yanked a ball to left field that looked like it might get out -- and probably would have at Camden Yards. Wieters also flied out to end the game. Adam Jones got just one at-bat and grounded out, but played several innings in center field.
