The championship hopes of Perry Hills and Anthony Nixon ended Friday night.

Hills, a Maryland-bound quarterback, hooked up with Pittsburgh Central Catholic teammate Nixon, a Terps wide receiver pledge, in the first quarter of a Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League semifinal matchup.

Hills, who had passed for over 1,500 yards this fall, and Anthony Nixon, who had over 600 yards receiving, hooked up for Central’s first score, a 7-yard TD pass with 7:54 to play in the first frame.

That play was one of just a few highlights for PCC on Friday, as the Vikings suffered a 28-14 loss to Upper St. Clair.

Hills completed 9 of 19 passes for 104 yards, and USC forced three turnovers from the Maryland-bound quarterback.

Basketball recruiting

Baltimore native and Maryland combo guard target Sam Cassell Jr. earned rave reviews from scouts over the weekend at the National Prep Showcase in New Haven, Conn.

So far Cassell is being shown the most love by Maryland, Washington, Nebraska, and Florida State. He is open to other schools getting involved in addition to those four and plans to take his team before settling on his college choice. An up tempo system that suits his style of play is the most important factor for Cassell in making his choice.
