No matter how Seth Allen’s college basketball career unfolds, the Fredericksburg (Va.) Christian combo guard will always be the answer to a significant Maryland trivia question:
Who was Mark Turgeon’s first recruit as Terps coach?
Allen committed to Turgeon less than a week after the former Texas A&M coach accepted Maryland’s offer. Allen, a 6-foot-2 combo guard, suddenly went from little-known regional recruit to ACC-bound player. The next time Allen took the court, he could sense a difference in how the opposition viewed him.
“I knew everyone was just going to come at me because I had a target on my back,” Allen said. “[My coach said], ‘Everyone’s going to come at you. Just play like nobody has ever seen you play.’ That’s what I did.”
Though he battled some nagging injuries over the summer, Allen was primed for his senior season. But his big plans for his high school finale hit a snag when he broke a bone in his left hand during a workout Dec. 26. The initial diagnosis appeared grim.
“The first doctor I saw said I’d be out for like two or three months and probably wouldn’t be able to come back,” Allen said. “But I kept going back, kept getting X-rays, taking the medicine that they gave me, Motrin and stuff. It just went well. I took care of my hand. I’m still not 100 percent. I’m still going to therapy. My grip is just getting stronger.”
Allen ended up missing 13 games, but returned just before the Eagles embarked on their postseason run, which ended with a loss in the Virginia Independent Schools Division II semifinals. Allen finished his two seasons at FCS as a 1,000-point scorer.
Before his arrival in College Park this summer, Allen intends to spend most of his time in the gym. He’s hoping to take “a lot of pressure off [Terrell] Stoglin’s hands to score” and also be a reliable option at the 1 behind Pe’Shon Howard. Allen said he can’t wait to start rewarding Turgeon’s faith in him.
“It means a lot [to be his first recruit],” Allen said. “I think I’m underrated and nobody knows about me. But Coach Turgeon knows what I’m capable of doing. He put a lot of trust in me and I trust him. I have enough potential to do a lot of things. I’ve just got to keep working hard and do what I’m capable of doing.”
