With Roddy Peters and Damonte Dodd wrapped up in 2013, much of Maryland’s focus has shifted to the 2014 class. But the Terps are also beginning to make inroads with some top sophomores, such as Malachi Richardson.

Richardson is a 6-5, 195-pound shooting guard from Roselle Catholic (N.J.) who’s already gained offers from Rutgers, Seton Hall, Miami, Cincinnati and James Madison. Maryland, Kansas, Villanova and Florida have also been in contact.

“[Terps assistant] coach [Scott] Spinelli gave me a call. He said my game fits their style of play and they’re really interested in me,” Richardson said.

Richardson averaged 12 points as a freshman and opened eyes last summer playing for the Team Final AAU program.

“I think people like my all-around game, my length and my jump shot,” he said.

Richardson said he grew up following Rutgers and Syracuse, but has no favorites.

“Not yet. It’s still early. [Location’s] not a factor,” he said.

Thus far, Richardson’s visited nearby schools Rutgers, Seton Hall and Villanova. He hopes to add Maryland to that list this winter.

“Maybe in a few weeks. I haven’t talked to them about it yet, but I will definitely do that soon,” he said. ”I don’t know a lot about it, but the strength of schedule is a plus. I like the ACC.”
