South Putnam relishes chance to be back in Sectional Championship

The Eagles survive a back-and-forth game with Monrovia to advance to their first sectional title game in six years where they'll face Covenant Chrisitian at 7 PM Saturday.

The game that was a blowout one way and then the other way and then turned into a nail biter before going decisive brought the intended result in the in for Lindsay Blackman.

In the end the 54-45 score above the Cascade gymnasium in her South Putnam team's favor wasn't really indicative of back-and-forth tussle between the Eagles and Monrovia-but in the end it was worth it.

"Right now its just kinda a breath of fresh air," said Blackman of her team's ability to advance to the Sectional 44 finals on Saturday night.

Such an opportunity is one that has eluded the program since 2006 and comes after the team won just five games the past two seasons.

"it's great to comeback and come into a Sectional Championship," said senior guard Emily Dobrowski, who sat out last year's 2-17 campaign with an injury.

She played a critical part in bringing South Putnam's comeback as a team to fruition, scoring seven points in a 20-4 run that put the Eagles up by 11 in the third quarter. But it wasn't enough to get rid of the Bulldogs, who stormed back with an 11-0 run of their own to tie the game up in the fourth quarter.

But the defense of the Eagles tightened in the final seven minutes, allowing just a single bucket to Monrovia. That one came in the final minute, when South Putnam used a collection of free throws and underneath hoops to seal their Sectional Semi-Final victory.

"We all just said 'Relax'," described Dobrowski of the team in the final minutes. "They're (Monrovia) really up right now so we just needed to comeback with the intensity and we did the same thing. We pushed turnovers and scored."

That earned them a date with Covenant Christian, who many considered the front runner in the tournament from the very beginning. Against Speedway they dealt with the same back-and-forth for a while before the Warriors pulled out a 67-57 victory.
