Heller's quick start helps Greenwood to 7-0

INDIANAPOLIS - Not since the days of A.J. Edds at linebacker and Rick Wimmer as coach has Greenwood enjoyed such a football renaissance.

But it appears that Mike Campbell has things turned back in that direction, leading the Woodmen to a 6-0 record to start the season and sole possession of first place in the Mid-State Conference.

On Friday, their quarterback helped to make it 7-0.

Ben Heller answered an early score by Decatur Central with a pair of long quarterback runs that busted open the game and another Greenwood wins as they beat the host Hawks 53-27.

At 7-0 the Woodmen put themselves two games ahead of Decatur Central in the Mid-State Conference. Only Plainfield remains with a shot to win the title outright, but a loss by the Quakers or a win by Greenwood next week would give them a title for the first time since 2005.

Decatur Central appeared to have something to say about that early when they finished a first quarter drive with a Kyle Tutsie 32-yard field goal to take a quick lead. That's when Heller came alive as he turned a lost play into a big one.

The senior quarterback rolled to his right looking for a receiver but didn't see one, instead running up the sidelines. He found room to run in the secondary as he got no resistance till the five-yard line, using a juke to get past the final defender to complete a 52-yard touchdown and a give Greenwood a 7-3 lead.

On the next series Heller was up to it again, this time taking it on a design carry though the Decatur Central defense for a 63-yard touchdown and a 14-3 lead. Heller would add another touchdown run as the Woodmen led 28-3 at the half and never looked back.

Greenwood can clinch at least a share of the Mid-State Conference championship with a win at home next Friday at home against Franklin. Decatur Central will try to rally on the road next week at Roncalli.
