FORTVILLE - "Do As You've Done Before."
It could have easily been put in the locker room of Mount Vernon as they looked to capture a Class 4A Sectional 13 championship.
In their first two playoff victories they did as they did in the regular season, beat New Palestine and Pendleton Heights by wide margins. A similar scenario presented itself to the Marauders on Friday as they faced Delta for the right to play in Regionals-a team they beat in Week 8 35-0.
For a third straight week, they followed that motto. While not as large of a margin the second time around Mount Vernon made a 14-point halftime lead stand up in a 28-13 win over the Eagles.
The Marauders win their first Sectional title since 1996 and the fourth all-time in school history and will face Cathedral in the Regional Championship next week.
After a scoreless first quarter Mount Vernon got on the board with a long drive capped off by Andy Spears' one-yard touchdown run. On the following possession, Tyler Dicks broke a sweep for a 74-yard touchdown to make it 14-0 going into halftime.
Early in the second half Anthony Burnett broke a 49-yard touchdown run to put the Marauders up 21-0, but Delta kept the game close with 13 unanswered points to cut the lead to eight.
Mount Vernon finally put the game away late in the fourth after Spears completed a long drive with his second touchdown run of the game.
