Lawrence Central, Pike cruise to opening night wins

The Bears trounce their township rival Lawrence North 70-0 while the Red Devils handle North Central 23-6.

INDIANAPOLIS - The season is only a ninth done, but already a favorite in Conference Indiana has emerged.

Ranked in the Top Ten in both the coaches and media pre-season polls in the IHSAA Class 5A football, Lawrence Central backed that up by humbling their township rival Lawrence North 70-0.

Pike, meanwhile, made sure they were a team to be noticed in the conference as well. They went on the road and upended North Central 23-6 to pick up their first win of the season.

It was the Bears who made the most noise on the night and it didn't take them long to do it. Without much resistance from the Wildcats, the Lawrence Central option ran up and down the field in the first half and took a 44-0 lead till the half.

Tyja Thompson and Will King added touchdowns on the first possession of the second half to keep the momentum and score the most points since 2004. That season the Bears got 73 in a victory over Perry Meridian.

Pike had a little tougher of a time early against the Panthers as they looked to bounce back from a 5-6 season, their worst under sixth year head coach Derek Moyers.

Capitalizing on a botched punt, Pike scored the opening touchdown of the season on their first offensive play when Brent Lyles hit Dominique Booth for an 11-yard touchdown to make it 7-0. Nick Hernandez booted a field goal to make it 10-0 early in the second quarter.

North Central got themselves back into the game when James Mitchell took the ensuing kick off 95-yards for a touchdown. The extra point was no good so the Red Devils led by four.

After that, however, Pike's defense would not allow another point. They would pitch the shutout the rest of the way and the offense added 13 more points to give the Red Devils a 17-point opening night win.
