Zbikowski's status remains unclear

The status of Tom Zbikowski remains unclear after the starting strong safety suffered a concussion in the Ravens’ 34-17 victory over the New York Jets Sunday night.

Coach John Harbaugh could not provide an update on Zbikowski’s health during his weekly briefing Monday afternoon, saying, “I have not heard anything along those lines. So I don’t have any information for you on that.”

Zbikowski did not return to the game after sustaining the head injury. His absence forced the defense to stray from its three-safety approach in its nickel package and insert Danny Gorrer as the fifth defensive back.

Zbikowski will have the upcoming bye week to recover, but if any symptoms from the concussion linger, Bernard Pollard could start at strong safety against his former employer, the Houston Texans, on Oct. 16.

“Bernard’s just a physical presence out there,” Harbaugh said of Pollard, who made three tackles in his first start for the Ravens against the Jets. “He makes his presence felt every single play – whether he’s blitzing, where he’s coming up in run defense, but also in coverage. He was a factor in coverage back there. He played very well. I think he’s really starting to learn our system coverage-wise back there, and he obviously showed up last night and played very well.”
