Matt Vensel's Top 12: Ranking the safeties
To kill time in the weeks leading up to Ravens training camp, Matt Vensel will rank the top 12 players at each position for the 2012 season. Today, it is safeties. Baltimore's Ed Reed and Pittsburgh's Troy Polamalu have long been considered the two top safeties in football. As time catches up to them, so will some of the league's top young safeties, but they are still unique defenders who alter enemy game plans.

1. Ed Reed, FS, Baltimore Ravens
Reed's tackling was rightfully scrutinized last season, but his range as a center fielder still remains elite.

No hometown bias here ! Reed may still be in the top 5 (debatable), but certainly not #1. Deficiant tackling and a lot of missed assignments due to risk-taking etc. The roving blitz plays where he would find a hole in teh line and be on the QB or punter in 2 seconds are gone. Intersecptions are down. Leadership is unquestioned, but physically he is just not the same. His elevated play in the playoffs was more of an exception than the norm.
