Veteran free-agent strong safety James Ihedigbo is visiting the Detroit Lions today, according to a league source.

Ihedigbo has connections to Detroit, having played for Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin for the past two seasons when Austin was the Ravens secondary coach. Former Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell is the Lions head coach.

The Lions cut safety Louis Delmas, and he has now signed with the Miami Dolphins, creating a vacancy in the Detroit defensive backfield.

Ihedigbo, 30, is coming off his best statistical season ever after a career-high 101 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for the Ravens in 2013.

Ihedigbo finished second on the team in tackles behind middle linebacker Daryl Smith. All three of his interceptions last season came against Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.

Ihedigbo is a hard-hitting 6-foot-1, 214-pounder who has previous stints with the New England Patriots and the New York Jets. He has 244 career tackles, six sacks and three forced fumbles.

It's unclear if Ihedigbo could return to the Ravens because they'd like to shift Matt Elam from free safety to his natural strong safety position.

Ihedigbo is a strong tackler with blitzing skills who displayed good range in pass coverage last season, consistently grading out as one of the Ravens' top defensive players.
