IN A HURRY:In a simulated scrimmage near the end of Thursday’s practice, starting quarterback Joe Flacco took the Ravens 80 yards on four plays. He hit tight end Ed Dickson up the seam for a nice gain then connected with wide receiver Torrey Smith on the next play. After another grab by Dickson moved the Ravens to the 10-yard line, Smith cut inside then beat cornerback Cary Williams back outside to the left sideline for a touchdown grab in the end zone.
MAJOR PAYNE: Wideout Logan Payne, who signed last week, stood out as the second-team offense drove down the field late in practice. He drew a pass interference flag on one play then made a pair of chain-moving third-down catches. Eventually, quarterback Tyrod Taylor went to the well once too many, sailing a ball over Payne’s head into the hands of safety Omar Brown.
K.O. K-Os KINDLE: Second-round draft pick Kelechi Osemele has become a fixture at right tackle with the first-team offense after missing the first couple of days of training camp. And he showed off his size, strength and technique throughout a 1-on-1 pass rush drill when he stonewalled Sergio Kindle, giving up no ground to the twisting and turning outside linebacker.
STANDOUT PERFORMER: After linebacker Albert McClellan smacked a would-be catch out of Dickson’s hands early in practice, the third-year tight end had a very productive practice. With Dennis Pitta sidelined with a broken hand, Dickson got a ton of reps with the first-team offense and made several catches, including an impressive spinning grab in the back of the end zone.
NEWCOMER WATCH: Cornerback Corey Graham added to his training camp interception total, making an easy interception on a pass that ricocheted to him off the hands of wide receiver Jacoby Jones and returning it to midfield. Jones, meanwhile, bounced back from that drop with a handful of catches, including a leaping catch over cornerback Lardarius Webb along the sideline.
INJURIES: Second-year cornerback Jimmy Smith dropped to the ground midway through practice and after staying down on both knees for about 90 seconds, he slowly walked off the field with the help of the trainers. Defensive coordinator Dean Pees said he didn’t know what the nature of the injury was, though he speculated that it could have been a back issue. Defensive end Arthur Jones and offensive guard Bobbie Williams were held out of the indoor practice for undisclosed reasons. Center Matt Birk (undisclosed) did not practice for a fourth consecutive day. Also sitting out practice were defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (hamstring); offensive tackles Bryant McKinnie (back) and Jah Reid (calf); running back Bernard Pierce (hamstring); wide receivers Patrick Williams (undisclosed), David Reed (knee) and Tandon Doss (hamstring); and linebackers Josh Bynes (undisclosed), Courtney Upshaw (arm) and Terrell Suggs (hamstring). Tight end Dennis Pitta (broken hand) remains sidelined, but he did make a cameo at Thursday's practice.
OVERHEARD: “Chad, go grab my Pedialyte! Isn’t that your job? Don’t you know that people are looking for jobs?” -- strong safety Bernard Pollard to director of media relations Chad Steele.
