Setting the scene: The Ravens began their last full practice at the Under Armour Performance Center for nearly a week around 1 p.m., and practiced under overcast skies until 4 p.m. It was the team's second straight day in full pads.
Daily battle: Practice wasn’t as fiery Sunday as it was the day before, but there was plenty of friendly competition between cornerback Chykie Brown and wide receiver Steve Smith, who came to blows Saturday. Smith beat Brown several times for big plays, but Brown covered him well, and Brown stripped him during situational work.
Big arm: One of Smith’s catches over Brown was on a throw that will go down as one of quarterback Joe Flacco’s best in camp. Flacco also hit wide receiver Torrey Smith with a deep bomb. With all the underneath passing in offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak’s scheme, Flacco’s ability to throw the deep ball hasn’t been on display much during training camp. But this showed he still has it.
Swat city: The offense moved the ball well throughout practice, but multiple defensive backs broke up passes in coverage. Rookie cornerback Deji Olatoye, safety Anthony Levine, safety Darian Stewart, and safety Brynden Trawick each swatted down passes in big situations Sunday.
Pick town: Cornerback Asa Jackson, safety Omar Brown and rookie defensive tackle Levi Brown each picked off passes, with Jackson picking off Flacco by jumping a crossing route and Omar Brown grabbing a pick off rookie quarterback Keith Wenning that hit off the receiver's hands and into Brown’s. Levi Brown’s interception was also on a tipped ball.
Bad start: Situational drills began with a simulation of the first drive of the game, and both the first and second offensive units couldn’t get a first down. Rookie linebacker C.J. Mosley was credited with one sack, and he could have had a second on the three-play series.
Owen owned: Two members of the defensive backfield picked on tight end Owen Daniels during seven-on-seven drills early in practice. Jackson swatted the ball out of Daniels’ hand after a short completion, and Daniels picked the ball up quickly. When the play was dead, Trawick knocked the ball out of his hands again.
Big returns: Wide receiver Jacoby Jones and running back Justin Forsett each broke off big kick returns during special teams work Sunday. Rookie running back Fitzgerald Toussaint and wide receiver LaQuan Williams each muffed a kick during practice.
Sneaky Suggs: Linebacker Terrell Suggs cut the line of waiting punt returners early in practice in an attempt to get a shot at a return, but special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg quickly told him to get lost.
Talk it out: Practice featured a pair of skirmishes in quick succession that didn’t amount to much during a full-team scrimmage, including a dust-up between inside linebacker Albert McClellan and rookie tackle Brett Van Sloten, then one between Trawick and tight end Phillip Supernaw.
Injury report: Rookie defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan returned to practice Sunday after missing three days with back spasms. Cornerback Jimmy Smith was dealing with back issues during practice, while wide receiver Michael Campanaro missed practice after leaving Saturday with a rib injury. Tight end Dennis Pitta and outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil had veteran days off, while long-term absentees who missed practice included cornerback Lardarius Webb (back), linebacker Daryl Smith (groin), defensive end Brent Urban (torn ACL), guard Will Rackley (head), and defensive tackle Terrency Cody (hip).
Overheard: “How much I gotta pay you, DJ? I’m dying here. I got some good tipping money. I just need some music.” -- Jones to the man in the team’s DJ booth during a particularly quiet stretch of practice.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
