Setting the Scene: The second practice of training camp began at 10 a.m. under sunny skies in Owings Mills, with the starters heading inside around 12:30 p.m. and the remainder of the team practicing until just before 1 p.m.
No contact? Tell the defense: The Ravens' defense came out fiery in the first 11-on-11 series of the practice. On the second play, Terrell Suggs wrapped up and tackled Ray Rice at the line of scrimmage — a big no-no on non-contact days. Later in the practice, Elvis Dumervil bull-rushed Owen Daniels at the line, then helped him up and patted him on the head. That sets up well for a strong full-pads practice Saturday.
Clean it up: Much is made of Joe Flacco being a vocal leader. He was plenty vocal after a pair of back-to-back false starts. “Jesus, come on guys, let’s go,” he implored after the second. It didn’t work. There were easily double-digit offside penalties. Given the team’s issues with pre-snap penalties last year, coach John Harbaugh could not have been pleased.
Turnover on downs: Midway through practice, each offensive unit got a chance at fourth and short, and the offense only converted one out of five times. On the one conversion — a pass in the flat to Owen Daniels — C.J. Mosley was clean into the backfield and likely would have had a sack in a contact situation.
Jimmy Shimmy: Cornerback Jimmy Smith jumped a short route in 1-on-1 drills against receiver Mike Willie and picked off a Flacco pass early in practice. Smith sprinted towards the end zone, pulled up in front of the gathered fans on the sidelines, and danced in celebration. Flacco, clearly not amused, glared at Smith with his hands on his hips.
Not again: Second-year defensive lineman Kapron Lewis-Moore missed part of mandatory minicamp last month with a hamstring grab he suffered chasing down Tyrod Taylor in the flat. Lewis-Moore found himself in a similar situation Friday, and thought twice about chasing Taylor too hard. He jokingly gave up near the sideline, ensuring he’d live to see another play.
Chykie walked: He sprinkled in some strong pass defenses, but cornerback Chykie Brown was again the target on the biggest passing plays of the day. Torrey Smith caught a big pass down the right sidelines in 7-on-7 drills against Brown, and Marlon Brown had a big double move up the middle for another big gain against the fourth-year corner.
Timmy Time: Second-round pick Timmy Jernigan is going to be a handful for opposing linemen this year. On two separate occasions, he blew through the second offensive line unit and got after the quarterback almost untouched.
Urschel shows his hands: While practicing field goals, rookie punter Richie Leone turned a muffed snap into a first down when he floated a pass to rookie guard John Urschel in the flat. Urschel outlept three defenders to come down with it, earning cheers from the rest of the team.
Injury Report: Cornerback Lardarius Webb left with an unspecified injury early in practice. Guard Will Rackley was absent from practice Friday, as was defensive tackle Terrence Cody, who is on his way back from a hip injury.
Overheard: “Where you going, Juice?” – Suggs to fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who jumped offside during a play from scrimmage. Suggs proceeded to do the same thing an hour later. No one chirped him.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
