Ravens place tight end Maxx Williams on injured reserve

The Ravens had high hopes for Maxx Williams this year. His season ends without him making a catch.

The Ravens placed Maxx Williams on injured reserve Friday, ending the second-year tight end’s season. Williams has been dealing with cartilage issues in his knee, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

A second-round pick in 2015, Williams didn’t have a reception through the first four games this year after an uneven rookie season in which he had 32 catches for 268 yards and a touchdown in 14 games.

“It’s the same thing he’s had,” Harbaugh said when asked about Williams on Monday. “It’s a cartilage issue that he has in there. It’s not something that can be fixed until it’s fixed. The doctors have to tell us what the best course of action is going forward. He can still play. Is it the best thing for him and all of that? We’ll have to figure that out.”

The Ravens didn’t announce a corresponding move for Williams, but it does free up a spot on the 53-man roster for tight end Darren Waller. Waller has been practicing with the team and is eligible to play after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Dennis Pitta and Crockett Gillmore remain the team’s top two tight ends. Daniel Brown was also added to the active roster this week.
