Ravens' Pernell McPhee on the mend from offseason groin surgery

The Baltimore Sun

Ravens defensive end Pernell McPhee is recovering from offseason groin surgery, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

The procedure was regarded as successful and McPhee is expected to make a complete recovery before training camp this summer. He'll likely be sidelined for at least a portion of the Ravens' offseason program and practices.

McPhee endured the groin injury for the majority of the season after undergoing a pair of arthroscopic knee surgeries last year.

McPhee was limited to 21 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in 12 games with six starts in his second season after finishing second on the Ravens as a rookie with six sacks.

It was a rough year overall for McPhee, who gritted out the injuries while grieving the deaths of three family members: his sister being killed in a shooting, his cousin drowning in a Florida canal and his godfather passing away from a heart attack.

"I've been through a lot," McPhee said. "I've lost a lot of people close to me. Death makes you appreciate life. It's so precious, but nothing will ever stop me. I'm built Ford-tough, man."
