Lewan is generally graded as the third-best offensive tackle behind Texas A&M's Jake Matthews and Auburn's Greg Robinson.
Martin is rated fourth among the tackles, but he could project to offensive guard in the NFL because he's a bit smaller at 6-foot-4, 308 pounds.
Lewan is regarded as an overpowering run blocker who plays with a lot of emotion. The 6-foot-7, 315-pounder has been prone to personal fouls at times.
Lewan has drawn scrutiny for his behavior, on and off the field.
During his podium interview session, Lewan denied an allegation that he intimidated a woman in 2009 who claimed she was sexually assaulted by former Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons. Gibbons was never charged with a crime, but he was later expelled from school for violating the university sexual misconduct policy.
“That’s definitely a situation between those two people,” Lewan said. “I’m not here to protect Brendan or the young lady, that’s not what I’m here to do. I’m here to play football.”
Lewan allegedly made threats toward the victim where he said if she went forward with charges against Gibbons, "then I'm going to rape her because he didn't."
Lewan emphasized that he didn't make those statements.
“I can say that I’ve never said those things,” Lewan said. “I’ve said a lot of dumb things in my life, but those are not things that I’ve said. But like I said before, that’s definitely a very touchy subject and I would never disrespect a woman like that. I like to consider myself a guy that likes to hold doors instead of threaten people. That’s not the kind of person I am.
“It kills me inside. I mean knowing that — it probably kills my mother, too. She helped raise me. But yeah, it hurts definitely because the player I am on the field it’s probably really easy to assume all those things about me but that’s not who I am at all.”
Lewan was never arrested or charged, but he was interviewed by police after an Ohio State fan alleged that he was assaulted. Lewan also denied fighting prior to the Wolverines' bowl game in Arizona.
“I went over the Ohio State incident once before,” Lewan said. “I wasn’t in any fight of any kind, I was actually breaking something up and some guy said that I slugged him. But that’s not who I am off the field, that’s not the kind of person I am. It might seem that way because of the way I play football, but that’s not me as a person.”
Lewan has built a reputation for having a nasty streak on the field,
Was this how he always conducted himself?
“No, actually when I was in third grade I was a corner and the next year I quit football because I hated being hit,” Lewan said. “I didn’t like being hit, so I was like nervous about that. I couldn’t tell you what happened, but one thing led to another.
"My senior year, I played offensive tackle and had the opportunity to earn a scholarship to Michigan and kind of just not going to take that for granted, just like I’m not taking this for granted.”
