Torrey Smith will be ready for offseason workouts

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith, who had hernia surgery in late January, says he is fully recovered from the injury that nagged him throughout his stellar rookie season and is ready to go for offseason workouts.

During a Tuesday appearance on Pro Football Talk Live, Smith said he had been dealing with the injury “from about Week 3 on” -- which is noteworthy because that week was his breakout game against the St. Louis Rams. In the 37-7 win, Smith had five catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the first quarter on his first two NFL receptions. The former Terp was a fixture in the starting lineup from that point forward.

“There were multiple [tissue] tears,” Smith said. “It was one of those injuries where you could play with it or get it fixed. But it wasn’t one of those injuries where I wasn’t able to run, period, so I kept playing with it.”

And all he did was set Ravens rookie records in receptions (50), receiving yards (841) and touchdowns (seven). Smith also had four catches for 91 yards and a touchdown during the postseason.

The Ravens in February confirmed that Smith had surgery. Two weeks ago, he was healthy enough to hoop it up at his charity basketball game in Virginia, but don't worry, he didn’t go all out (most players took it easy). He is expected to be in attendance Monday when the Ravens begin their offseason program.

So what can fans expect from Smith in 2012 with a clean bill of health and a year of experience under his belt?

“The biggest thing is I’ll be healthy. So whatever comes with that. I was [still] fast last year. I’m excited about that,” said the 23-year-old, who later added, “For me, it’s about being consistent.”
