GQ's oral history of Suggs talking about Tim Tebow

Former Cleveland Browns and soon-to-be-former Denver Broncos quarterback Brady Quinn is being scrutinized for honest comments he made about Broncos teammate Tim Tebow to GQ magazine during the 2011 season.

Ravens linebacker and 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs was also quoted by Michael Silver in “An Oral History of Tebow Time” -- and it seems Suggs eventually became a believer by the season's end.

Here’s an oral history of Suggs on Tebow based on a few quotes Silver used in his article in GQ’s March issue.

Week 8, after the Detroit Lions beat the Broncos: “They say we were giving him a hard time because he's a Christian. No, that's not it! We were giving him a hard time because he was terrible."

Week 11, after Tebow rushed for a 29-yard touchdown in the final minute of a win over the New York Jets: “I couldn't believe my eyes. Somebody has to make a play, and nobody made a play.”

Weeks 15-17, when the Broncos lost three straight games but still made it into the playoffs: “I mean, it's an insult to us players. You know, wins are hard to come by in this league, and if I was Denver's defense, I would feel a certain way -- they're not allowed to [say it], 'cause they're all on one team, but people are making it look like Tim Tebow is the kid from Foxboro [aka New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady] -- which, that couldn't be more opposite. It's just crazy that we're calling him a phenomenon when basically he's mediocre. Cam Newton's a way better quarterback than Tim Tebow, and we don't have a Cam Newton phenomenon.”

Before Tebow and the 8-8 Broncos hosted the 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC divisional round: “If he wins the playoff game, I'll be very surprised. And I'll get off him. And I'll say, ‘I don't know what it is about him, but he does know how to win.’ But until he wins the playoff game, I'm not a believer.”

[Blogger’s note: Suggs also made these Tebow comments to ESPN in January, but they weren’t included in Silver's GQ piece.]

After Tebow threw for 316 yards -- 80 on his game-winning touchdown pass in overtime -- as the Broncos eliminated the Steelers): “I'm shocked. Jaw is on the floor! He shocked us all.”

Is Suggs still a believer? We'll find out in the 2012 season when Tebow and the Broncos visit M&T Bank Stadium. The date is TBD.
