The Ravens continued to bolster the middle of their defense with the selection of University of Virginia defensive tackle Brent Urban.
Taken with the 134th overall pick of the fourth round, Urban is 6-foot-7, 295 pounds and he projects as a five technique defensive lineman.
"He was a guy we really liked throughout the whole process. He’s put together, he’s chiseled," said Joe Hortiz, the Ravens' director of college scouting. "On film, you see the prototypical five-technique. We felt like we’re getting a potential starter down the road as a five technique."
Urban is a late bloomer of sorts, having grown up in Toronto as a former junior league hockey player. He quit hockey at age 16 after growing to 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds to concentrate on football. He was the 15th overall selection in the Canadian Football League draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
"I’ve only been playing football at a high level really since I got into UVA," Urban said. "There’s definitely a lot of years of growth left in me. A lot of the American kids have been getting high-level coaching in high school and even earlier. I think I still have a lot of potential that’s untapped and I’m excited."
Urban started 20 games for the Cavaliers the past two seasons. He had 40 tackles and one sack last year. ESPN had him as the seventh ranked defensive tackle in the draft. In his college career, Urban played in 36 games, registering 75 tackles with three sacks. He also blocked a kick.
Urban has great size and good physical tools, but he's struggled to stay healthy. He missed four games after suffering a high ankle sprain last season against Maryland. The ankle injury persisted through the Senior Bowl which prevented him from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine.
He had ankle surgery in February and said that he expects to be ready for training camp in July.
"It’s feeling good now though and it will be kind of ready for late May, early June," Urban said. "I’ll be able to be ready for training camp and that kind of thing. It’s going well and I’m excited to get started and compete right away."
The Ravens, who lost starting defensive tackle Arthur Jones in free agency, also drafted defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan from Florida State in the third round. Urban was the Ravens' fourth defensive player to be selected in their first five picks.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
