Ravens consider Chris Canty as good as advertised

Since signing Chris Canty to a three-year, $8 million contract in March, the Ravens have formed a strong opinion on the former New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says the 6-foot-7, 317-pounder arrived as advertised.

"Chris Canty is a great example, and you guys see him every day," Harbaugh said. "He’s just another guy who is a 4.0. There’s nothing that he doesn’t bring to the table every day. As a player, person, leader, he’s got it all. He’s been a great addition for us.”

Canty, 30, is starting at defensive tackle next to Haloti Ngata, the Pro Bowl defensive lineman now lining up at nose guard with the first-team defense.

Canty was limited to nine games, 26 tackles and three sacks last season because of a knee injury. He was cut by the Giants in February and later visited the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans prior to signing with the defending Super Bowl champions

Canty, who received a $2 million signing bonus for a total of $2.8 million in guaranteed money, has displayed no signs of any past issues with the knee, athletically penetrating the line of scrimmage in practices and games with a powerful charge.

Canty is capable of rushing the passer or providing a run-stopping presence and is expected to have a versatile role.

"I see myself as a jack of all trades, just being able to fit in wherever needed," Canty said earlier in camp. "I have a unique skill set. I’ve played inside, I’ve played outside, I’ve played 3-4 and I’ve played 4-3. So, I’m very familiar with multiple front systems. I think that experience is going to bode well for me and for this unit moving forward.”
