USING THEIR HANDS The secondary was particularly active in getting a hand on passes. Cornerbacks Jimmy Smith and Chykie Brown deflected two passes each, and outside linebacker Sergio Kindle tipped a Tyrod Taylor pass intended for rookie wide receiver Dorian Graham in the end zone. At one point, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron yelled at the offensive players on the sideline, “They’re reaching for the ball, and we’re not! Reach for the ball!”
K.O. WITH THE KO Rookie guard/tackle Kelechi Osemele has shown that he has a mean streak to go along with his physical attributes. During individual drills, he drove undrafted rookie nose tackle Ishmaa’ily Kitchen to the ground and then finished the block with a knee to Kitchen’s back. The move drew some catcalls from the other defensive linemen.
JUMPIN’ JERRY Jerry Rosburg is not shy about raising his voice, and the special teams coordinator was especially demonstrative during practice. He had a long talk with Nigel Carr after the rookie inside linebacker blocked a punt by Sam Koch to remind Carr not to risk injury to Koch. Rosburg also questioned long snapper Morgan Cox during punt coverage. But Rosburg also praised wide receiver LaQuan Williams and running back Anthony Allen on back-to-back punt coverages and complimented Koch when he landed a punt inside the 10-yard line.
STANDOUT PERFORMER Lardarius Webb, who led the defense in interceptions with five last season, has been just as opportunistic in camp. The cornerback grabbed his third interception in the last four days when quarterback Joe Flacco threw a ball behind Williams. Webb, who slid to the turf to corral the ball, jumped to his feet and raced more than 30 yards to the end zone untouched.
NEWCOMER WATCH Because of the absences of wide receivers Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones, Deonte Thompson was promoted to run with the first offense. The undrafted rookie was targeted eight times by Flacco, making four receptions and gaining one first down.
INJURIES Eight-time Pro Bowl free safety Ed Reed (unspecified) and Smith (sprained ankle) were new to the list of players who were absent from practice. Tight end Dennis Pitta (broken right hand) and inside linebacker Josh Bynes (cracked vertebrae) did not practice for the 11th straight day. Inside linebacker Darryl Blackstock (groin) sat out his sixth consecutive session. Tight end Ed Dickson (sprained right shoulder) and defensive tackle Ryan McBean (broken left ankle) did not practice for the fourth straight day. Wide receivers Jacoby Jones (unspecified) and Devin Goda (unspecified) and left guard Bobbie Williams (swollen right ankle) missed their second consecutive practice. Defensive end Pernell McPhee (unspecified) and rookie cornerback Asa Jackson (hamstring) returned after sitting out Monday’s session. Wide receiver/return specialist David Reed (knee surgery) is still on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Terrell Suggs (torn right Achilles tendon) is on the non-football injury list.
OVERHEARD “This ain’t Miami! You get hit!” – Inside linebacker Jameel McClain to Tommy Streeter after the rookie wide receiver caught a pass from Curtis Painter and was promptly bumped by rookie free safety Cyhl Quarles.
