The Ravens have yet to make a move to add a quarterback after Joe Flacco season-ending knee injury Sunday. However, they did make a switch at wide receiver, promoting Chuck Jacobs from the practice squad and releasing Joe Morgan.
"He’s been practicing with us and he’s done a really nice job," coach John Harbaugh said. "We’re excited to add him. We let Joe Morgan go to make room. Joe did a good job for us. It just wasn’t kind of working in the plans for us, fit-wise."
Morgan was signed out of a tryout following receiver Steve Smith Sr.'s season-ending Achilles tendon injury, but hasn't played in two games with the Ravens.
Jacobs, who was signed to the practice squad on the same day Morgan was added to the Ravens active roster, has yet to play in an NFL regular-season game. He did have two receiving touchdowns in the 2013 preseason for the San Francisco 49ers.
In another move, former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Chris Matthews, who came from obscurity to catch four passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in last season's Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, joined the Ravens' practice squad.
The Seattle Seahawks cut Matthews last week.
"You might remember Chris from Seattle," Harbaugh said. "He was waived by Seattle a week or two ago, so he’s going to be on the practice squad for us. I’m sure he’s planning and hoping to earn playing time in the near future."
The move will likely be just the start of the roster maneuvering this week for the Ravens, who lost Flacco and starting running back Justin Forsett to season-ending injuries in Sunday's 16-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams.
One potential move could be adding veteran backup quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who was waived Monday by the Chicago Bears. Clausen played under Ravens offensive coordinator Marc Trestman in Chicago, so he should know the Ravens' offense relatively well.
The Ravens also will have to make a decision on defensive end Brent Urban, whose three-week window to practice with the team without being added to the 53-man roster ends this week.
