As an undrafted rookie, Nigel Carr is looking to make an impression with the Ravens coaching staff in any way possible, but he may have taken the wrong route with special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg.
That’s because at the start of Tuesday’s practice at the team’s training facility in Owings Mills, the inside linebacker rushed from the left side of the defensive line and swooped in to block a punt attempt by Sam Koch. Immediately afterward, Rosburg grabbed Carr and spoke to him for an extended period of time.
After practice, Carr confirmed that Rosburg was reminding him of Koch’s importance to the team.

“He told me, ‘Don’t injure the kicker,’” Carr said. “But that’s part of it. As a rookie, you try to do everything right. Even on the scout team, you know that everything counts. I just told him, ‘Yes, sir, won’t happen again.’ And I moved on with my practice.”
Because he wasn’t selected by the Ravens or any of the other 31 organizations in April’s NFL draft, Carr doesn’t have the comfort level that those who were chosen might have about their respective futures in the league. So that puts Carr in the delicate position of being aggressive without risking injury to others.
Carr said he’s not looking to hurt anyone, but he simply wants to make the team’s active 53-man roster.
“If they see you doing that on scout team, they’ll know you really want to be here and that you really want to be on the team,” he said. “A person in my position, an undrafted guy, it’s going to be hard to make this 53-man roster. So I have to do everything right. It’s not as much the defense right now. It’s more about special teams, going out there and really being perfect on special teams. That’s what’s going to put my foot in the door. That’s something that I’ve got to deal with, and that’s something I know.”
