Safety Haruki Nakamura could miss at least a month after suffering a right knee injury in the Ravens’ 37-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams Sunday.
Although the team was still waiting for the results of a magnetic resonance imaging exam late Monday afternoon, coach John Harbaugh confirmed that timetable for Nakamura, who injured the posterior cruciate ligament in the knee.
“Haruki’s MRI is not back yet, but it looks promising,” Harbaugh said Monday. “In terms of him being able to come back, maybe a month or so. We’ll see.”
Nakamura suffered the injury during a punt return in the first quarter and did not return. After the game, he did not need crutches to navigate his way through the locker room at the Edward Jones Dome, but he was walking slowly and stiffly.
“There’s actually no pain,” Nakamura said Sunday. “It’s just really stiff more than anything.”
The loss of Nakamura further saps a secondary depleted by injuries. Rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith is likely out until at least after the team’s bye week with a high left ankle sprain. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth did not play Sunday because of continued pain in his surgically-repaired right knee. And cornerback Chris Carr returned Sunday after a re-aggravated left hamstring issue forced him to miss the previous contest against the Tennessee Titans.
Still, Harbaugh said the club is not actively looking for a safety to replace Nakamura.
“We’ll be talking about that,” Harbaugh said. “I think we’re OK with the guys that we have. Chris Carr can go back there for a swing at safety, [cornerback] Lardarius [Webb] can go back, those guys you play in the slot. I don’t think we have a plan today to make a move, but that could change.”
Harbaugh also said that inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe is dealing with a hamstring injury suffered Sunday, and his availability for Sunday night’s home game against the New York Jets is unclear.
“Dannell’s hamstring is just going to be throughout the week to see how it responds,” Harbaugh said. “So we’ll probably know by Friday.”
