Webb underwent surgery last October to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but is practicing and the Ravens are optimistic that he'll be ready for the season-opener against the Denver Broncos. He will be brought along cautiously during the preseason, though.
"It's reasonable that he would be playing against Denver with the state of ACL and recovery," Harbaugh said. "That's definitely our target. I think he's got a very good chance to come back and play during the preseason at some point in time, but that's not the most important thing. We're kind of easing him in. He could probably do more than we're letting him do. We're not going to push it."
McClain, though, is sidelined indefinitely on the physically unable to perform list with a spinal cord contusion suffered last December against the Washington Redskins. The Ravens won't put him on the field until his magnetic resonance imaging exam no longer has any signs of injury to his back.
McClain participated in individual drills during offseason practices and he remains optimistic that he will eventually be cleared based on the feedback he's received from doctors.
"With Jameel not able to be out there, which is extremely disappointing, I really thought he would be there," Harbaugh said. "It's just when you look at the MRI and you see what's on there, there's no denying the fact that it's not safe for him at this time. So, there's no way we're going to put him out there until it clears up."
With McClain's status unresolved, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome signed former Jacksonville Jaguars starting inside linebacker Daryl Smith. Smith worked with the first defense immediately upon
his arrival at camp.
"The Darryl Smith signing is a great move by Ozzie, it was a big move," Harbaugh said. "He's been better than advertised."
Harbaugh didn't necessarily like all of the execution on the first day of training camp, but was fine with the desire his players displayed.
"We had a great day, but I can't say that we practiced great," Harbaugh said. "We practiced about like you expect to practice on the first day of training camp. We got a long way to go, the message is we got a long way to go between now and tomorrow. The enthusiasm was really good, the effort was tremendous."
