Matt Birk’s absence Monday was chalked up to him taking advantage of the Ravens’ tradition of giving players 30 years and older the option of taking the day off. But the 15-year center was not present during the first 45 minutes of Tuesday’s session at the team’s training complex in Owings Mills.
It’s unclear what is plaguing Birk, who does have a history of leg and knee issues since joining the team for the 2009 season. Coach John Harbaugh is scheduled to address the media after practice.
Other players who were absent included tight end Dennis Pitta (broken right hand), rookie outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw (bruised right shoulder), defensive tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu (unspecified), wide receiver Tandon Doss (hamstring), rookie running back Bernard Pierce (unspecified) and linebacker Josh Bynes (unspecified).
Offensive tackle Ramon Harewood returned to practice for the first time since rolling his ankle last Thursday. Rookie wide receivers Tommy Streeter (unspecified) and Devin Goda (left arm) also participated after sitting out Monday’s session.
