INDIANAPOLIS -- Maryland tight end Matt Furstenburg is treating the NFL scouting combine as a massive audition for a job.

Toward that goal, Furstenburg ran an impressive 40-yard dash Saturday with a 4.62 clocking for the second-fastest time among the tight ends.

Furstenburg is graded as a later-round draft prospect, or a priority free agent should he go undrafted. The New Jersey native caught 16 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns in his senior year and was the lone Terrapin invited to the combine.

"Just trying to get people to know my name coming out of this, and raise my stock a little bit more," said Furstenburg, who played in the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game. "I think I’m very versatile. You know, I can spread the field downfield. I think I’m pretty physical at the point of attack.”

The 6-foot-3, 242-pounder said he tries to emulate Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta and Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels.

In particular, Pitta's game as a receiving tight end is something that Furstenburg hopes to mirror.

“He’s just so smooth," said Furstenburg, a former all-state tight end and defensive lineman growing up in Flemington, N.J. "Everything in his routes, catching and everything. His games are on every week, and they’re always on our television, the local stations."

Furstenburg said he's been trying to tailor his skills toward the trend in the NFL toward passing-oriented offenses.

“Yeah, I try working on my pass-catching skills every day, because I know that’s where the NFL is going towards," Furstenburg said. "I'm just trying to improve my stock on that and show that I can do that.”
